William Coit papers, 1760-1803.

Incoming and outgoing correspondence, insurance policy and ships' papers including bills of lading, and legal and financial records of a Norwich, Connecticut, merchant. Several letters were written by William Coit Jr. to his father about business topics including the acquisition of onions and other types of cargo. Jedediah Morse was also a frequent correspondent, mostly relating personal news. One outgoing letter contained orders to Captain Alpheus Davidson of the Sloop Nabbey. Ship's papers are for the Sloops Ranger, Mary, Sterling, Sally and Polly. Among the legal documents are a petition to the city of Norwich to retain a law restraining swine in the city, and a petition to the U.S. Congress regarding a proposed tax on imported molasses. One interesting legal document names Coit as having power of attorney for a number of individuals living in Barbados.
